A note from Michael VonHeckler
Last Saturday April 5th 2008, My wife Diane and I had dinner with four friends, Chris and Celine Belling and Bruce and Maria Sanderson, at One Madison Park in New York City. The food was remarkable. Our 2006 Warm Lake Estate Pinot Noir, just recently bottled, was served with the dinner course. For appetizers, soups, salads and numerous intermezzos, we had 2 of our limestone rich competitors. First a 2004 Burgundy, Premier Cru Claude Dugat, Gevery Chambertine and second the 2004 Calera California Pinot Noir. Both the competitors wines showed great fruit and a balance of structure and fresh fruit that gives them a well deserved reputation. From a limestone chalkiness both wines were well below the levels apparent in the Warm Lake Estate 2006 Pinot Noir. The 2006 showed great fruit and structure, just as the French and California competitors did, but the levels of limestone and chalkiness on the palate and the rich round ripe tannins were much more apparent in the 2006 Warm Lake Estate Pinot Noir. The Niagara Escarpment AVA, rated as the most promising under developed wine region by the NY State Department of Agriculture and Markets, is now showing it's deserved designation as an American Viticultural Area with recognition world wide.
